Fly Fisherman’s DIY Tiny House Built with Recycled Materials

Seasoned fly fisherman, Alan Peak built a simple yet very clever tiny house on wheels using recycled and reclaimed materials. He parked it on his own land, a beautiful wooded lot. It’s located in a rural neighborhood just outside a Colorado mountain town. Ultimately, after much hard work preparing the land, Alan created the perfect fly fishing adventure basecamp.

His small parcel is triangular-shaped and mostly uphill. For that reason, it was considered unbuildable. Alan had to do significant grading work to create a level spot for his tiny house. Additionally he built a water storage shed because his rural neighborhood doesn’t have any access to water. Most importantly, Alan demonstrates how a tiny house can add value to odd vacant lots.

As a long-time fly fisherman and veteran, Alan is extremely resourceful. This is exemplified in his use of materials and creative space-saving solutions. For instance, his wood floor is so beautiful; you might not guess it was made from pallets. Another ingenious feature is his kitchen sink. In a single step, it transforms into washing machine. One of the many vintage gems put to use in his tiny space.

There’s no ducking required for climbing his loft, even for someone as tall as 6’2. Also, inspired by submarine storage, Alan created a unique storage space under his bed. His entire bed easily lifts up to reveal rows of cubbies, which he uses as his closet.

Alan’s usable living space easily expands with the addition of his site-built deck. To access it, Alan easily climbs out of his giant sidewall window. There he entertains guests, reads and enjoys wildlife watching, which is abundant. During our visit to see him, we saw foxes, a herd of deer and an owl.

Above all, his tiny house easily transforms to accommodate his hobbies, like his artful fly tying.
